The fact is, however, that the network for all professional Enterprise NAS or IP-SAN storage solutions that is used to access the storage represents the limiting factor.
Even an optimally configured storage system cannot implement more than 80 MB/s (sequential data stream) over a GBit (copper) LAN port. All computers accessing the storage will have to share this transfer rate. Teaming or trunking the LAN ports can only provide a limited capacity increase and will very quickly make the configuration complicated and inconvenient. Even this is usually insufficient in the database environment or in virtualised server landscapes.
A 10GbE storage backbone to access the storage can be used to produce relief. The storage systems are equipped with cost-efficient 10GbE Copper (CX4) LAN ports and addressed over a storage-capable 10GbE switch. This accepts the switching to the computers connected with 1GbE which then share the bandwidth of the storage backbone.
