NAS /iSCSI
Network Attached Unified Data Storage
Network Attached Storage - NAS in short - stands for mass storage that is connected directly to the local network (LAN). It is used as simple memory capacity expansion without disrupting the ongoing business operation while using the already existing LAN infrastructure. The storage space and the data stored there are available to all authorised users.
NAS systems function as pure file servers and possess their own operating system. N-TEC systems work either with Windows (MS series) or Linux (DSS series) operating systems. Releases (shares) guarantee access to data storage. This access occurs only on the file system level. NAS systems are less complex in their structure and management than Fibre Channel-based SAN solutions, for example, but are subject to the performance limits of the network where they are operated. NAS systems are connected to the common local network (LAN). NAS uses file-based protocols, such as Microsoft CIFS / SMB (Common Internet File System), NFS (Network File System), and Apple Talk. Integrating NAS solutions in heterogeneous IT structures as well can thus be implemented very quickly and simply.
